I settled $22,000 of credit card debt for $11,000 -- and I did it ALL BY MYSELF!

I graduated college in 2006 with a bachelor’s degree, an entry level job (and salary), and $22,000 worth of credit card debt. Before long I was getting phone calls and letters from collection agencies.

I had four options:

  • Credit Counseling (talking about my debt wasn’t going to help anything)

  • Debt Consolidation (adding all my debt together wouldn’t change how much I owed)

  • Bankruptcy (Yikes!)

  • Debt Settlement (settling my accounts for less than I owed – cool)

Debt settlement seemed like the best and most interesting option to me. So I found a company to help me settle my debt. To make a long story short – I paid them THOUSANDS of dollars over the course of a few years to supposedly “help” me negotiate settlements with the collection agencies.

Let’s just say our definitions of “help” were very different: I ended up doing a lot of the work myself.  I ultimately decided to dump the company I was working with, demand a refund (which I partially got), and continue to negotiate on my own behalf.

I spent two years learning the ins and outs of the collection industry and developed my own system and strategy for settling each of my accounts – one by one – for anywhere from 30% – 60% less than what I owed!

You can do it too, and I can teach you. Don’t believe companies that tell you that you can’t or shouldn’t negotiate on your own behalf. You can and you should. But you need to know what the heck you’re doing first.
